Freaknik Atlanta 2011???

When: April 15-17, 2011
Where: All over Downtown Atlanta

Just as I posted last year about Freaknic Atlanta 2010, the hype has begun again. I emphasize “hype” because last year’s turnout was anemic. This year’s events are little more diverse. Smart move by the promoter to take a little different angle on the infamous (fun) event that had the local government shook. Now its more of a get together vibe, but ladies are encouraged to wear their sexiest bikini. I can see how that alone could draw a nice crowd. In a few days we will know how this turns out.

Calendar of Events:

April 14th
Official 72 hour block party (Near Downtown Aquarium)

April 15th
Freaknic Nation 100,000 Strong (Downtown Atlanta)

April 16th
Peachtree Street Car & Bike Show (Underground)
Greek Picnic (All day Grant Park)

April 17th
Block Part Continues (Near Downtown Aquarium)

Freaknik Atlanta 2010??

There has been some SERIOUS buzz going around about Freaknik 2010 in Atlanta. Although the promoters of this event have created a huge following, the facts do no support what they are saying. The promoter’s website promote this event as if it was cleared by the City of Atlanta. As of today, they have not been issued any permits by the city. The mayor of Atlanta, Kasim Reed has gone on the record saying:

“It’s not my intention for the city to be supportive of it,” Reed said.

When asked about a PG version:

“No. And ‘no G’ version.” Reed answered. “I think we have too many challenges in the public safety space to deploy those kind of resources around a program or an event that is not well run or well managed.”

There you have it. Athough the idea of bringing back such an iconic event back to life is fantastic, it will not become a reality without going through the proper channels. If you are interested in finding out more about this event check out the promoter’s website.

Kappa/Texas Beach Party 2009

We have been receiving questions regarding this event and I am sorry to tell you it is officially dead.

Last year (2008) Galveston promoter Tim Day officially canceled the event a few days before it was scheduled to begin. Citing he wanted the young people to focus on job opportunities.

This year there has been no buzz or mention of this event from promoters.

Normally this event takes place the same weekend as Black College Reunion in Daytona Beach, FL.

Travel Alert For U.S. Citizen Visiting Mexico

March 3, 2009 by
Filed under Central / South America

February 20, 2009

This Travel Alert updates security information for U.S. citizens traveling and living in Mexico. It supersedes the Travel Alert for Mexico dated October 15, 2008, and expires on August 20, 2009.

While millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year (including thousands who cross the land border every day for study, tourism or business), violence in the country has increased recently. It is imperative that travelers understand the risks of travel to Mexico, how best to avoid dangerous situations, and whom to contact if one becomes a crime victim. Common-sense precautions such as visiting only legitimate business and tourist areas during daylight hours, and avoiding areas where prostitution and drug dealing might occur, can help ensure that travel to Mexico is safe and enjoyable.
